MEET THE PRODUCER | What's a generational coffee empire without a little sibling rivalry? This month, we have the distinct privilege of featuring two Honduras Cup of Excellence (HCOE) contenders on our menu - and they're coming to us from two of the three Sagastume brothers!
Yerin Sagastume is a fourth generation coffee producer in the Santa Barbara region of Honduras, and he is the youngest of the Sagastume siblings - a quartet of coffee producers who are each working to shepherd the family business into a new generation of specialty coffee. We have featured coffees from several members of this storied family on our menu - including Yerin and his siblings, and also their father, Pedro. Over the last decade or so, Pedro has been dividing his many farms amongst his children for them to continue shepherding the family legacy. El Carreto is one such plot of land, gifted to Yerin by his father and home to this very special SL-28 lot.
At HCOE back in May of this year, one of our owners (Kyle) and our head roaster (Matt) had the privilege of spending time with the Sagastume brothers and cupping their coffees at origin. This was his third time competing at HCOE, and Yerin took #28 at the event. Though he is thrilled for this placement and aware of his steady improvement over the last few years, Yerin remains focused on "making the podium" at HCOE soon - and ultimately besting his big brother in doing so.
TRUST THE PROCESS | The seeds which yielded the coffee trees that produced this lot were transported from Kenya to Honduras, and the resultant fruit maintains much of that characteristic Kenyan SL-28 variety. After being picked at peak ripeness, the coffee cherries were hand-sorted for quality and placed directly on raised beds for drying, until optimal moisture content was achieved.
TAKE A SIP | Perhaps the loveliest thing about this coffee is its ability to showcase high fermentation impact while maintaining a vibrant acidity like orange zest, thanks in part to the SL-28 variety itself. It's really, really fruity - with notes like blueberry, tart cherry, and chocolate-covered strawberry taking center stage. Big and intense, but still notably sweet, sipping this coffee reminds us of enjoying port wine and red sangria. Cheers.
